SYDNEY (21 August 2005) The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, in partnership with the Fairfield City Library and Museum Serivces and the Philippine-Australian Society for Senior Citizens, Inc. (PASSCI) have launched the Read Philippines Project in Australia to encourage interest and awareness of Philippine cultural heritage by enhancing the existing collection of books and audio-visual materials on the Philippines in Australian libraries.
As Consul General Maria Theresa Lazaro explains, “The project’s aim is to develop among young Filipino-Australians, their friends and the community-at-large greater interest and awareness of Philippine history, culture, values and ethnicity. This is an invitation to discover and explore the richness of the Philippines by making information on the Philippines readily accessible to the Australian public.”
“The involvement of the Filipino-Australian community in the partnership is a vital component in the success of the project. As stakeholders in the endeavour, they can encourage Filipinos and Australians alike in the process to support their local library by reading on the Philippines. It is my hope that other Filipino community organizations in New Sotuh Wales can likewise support a Read Philippines project with their nearest local library ”. Consul General Lazaro added. The Read Philippines Project involves the donation of educational/ academic books, videos and CD-ROMs to an “adopted” public library.
A Filipino community organization can act as a coordinator to solicit book donations, maintain and update the collection, address enquiries and concerns regarding the Read Philippines section in their adopted library. The coordinator will also serve as a contact person for the library, the community, and the Philippine Consulate in case of additional donations, information, or events connected with the Read Philippines section.
